The gateway to Scandinavian Bushcraft and Wilderness lore.

Since before the days of the once feared Vikings Sweden has been known as a land of rugged tree lined beauty and little has changed over the passing years for even today for it is still a place where over 50% of the land mass consists of vast stretches of verdant forest and glittering lakes.

The Vildmark course is set in the exquisite wilderness county of Värmland, a county famous for its mighty lakes and majestic forests of birch, pine and spruce. In the cool clear waters of these lakes you will still find many breeds of fish while in the shaded glades of its wooded hills and valleys wolf, bear, lynx, and wolverine can still be found as well as the magnificent and noble king of the forest, the mighty Elk.

It is a land where bushcraft skills are still handed down from father to son, and flourish as both a treasured national heritage and as everyday practical skills which many people still use at part of their day to day lifestyle.

Now, you too, have the unique opportunity to learn these skills from a true Scandinavian master. Preben Mortenson, your chief instructor, has taught and practiced Bushcraft skills for over 40 years; indeed he made headline news in the world's newspapers in 1962 after leading a 14 day survival course on a remote and deserted island where he actually sank his own boat to add a sense of realism to the course! Preben is a true outdoorsman, he is a search and rescue leader, a huntsman and a fisherman whose mischievous sense of humour only serves to highlight his vast and much admired repertoire of knowledge.

The Vildmark course is ideal for both the novice and the more experienced outdoors person alike, primarily due to the fact that all the skills taught are Scandinavian in nature and whilst covering all the fundamental areas you would expect they still have a style unique to this part of the world.

Course content includes:

Safe uses of knife, saw and axe.
Outdoor cookery skills -including a ground oven and Swedish army mess kit.
Hygiene in the field.
Field Lighting
Water skills.
Plant walks
Shelter building.
Hunting and fishing skills.
Kit lectures for temperate and arctic travel.
Fire by friction
Introduction to the Canadian canoe and techniques

Plus much more - but please bear in mind course syllabus is flexible and may change with local conditions and student ability/interest.

We hope you enjoy your time with us and to help you do this we may also treat you to some of the other luxurious tastes of Scandinavia, for example a sweat lodge with accompanying hot tub, a chance to fish the crystal clear waters of the lake from within a graceful beauty of a classic Canadian style canoe and a tasty end of course BBQ where treats of Swedish delicacies are sure to be on the menu.

The course is of one week duration and is self catering through out - however some meals maybe provided of natural fare, this added to the fact that our admin team are more than happy make the odd trip into town for you, means you will never good hungry.
